Even after more than 50 years in business, Mama’s in North Beach often has a line of hungry diners
We’ve talked about hamburgers, fried chicken and my trip to the Midwest, so let’s get back to breakfast.
The week before last I wrote about Bette’s Oceanview Diner in Berkeley, and had asked readers for their thoughts on the best breakfast stops in San Francisco and the Bay Area. More than 325 people had opinions.
While not quite as controversial as the hamburger poll, 165 places were mentioned. The clear winner was Dottie’s True Blue Cafe, which has — as you might guess — an interior washed in cheery blue, a sharp contrast to its drab Tenderloin location. The interior has a barebones diner feel but that doesn’t stop people from waiting more than an hour for a table or counter seat. The myriad reasons include: house-baked cinnamon streusel coffee cake, scones, blueberry cornmeal pancakes and one of the daily egg specials that might be a pulled pork or lamb sausage scramble.
