Top 10 breakfasts in Brisbane

March 6, 2014 – 12:53 pm

Breakfast out, particularly on the weekend, really seems to start the day off well.

Even those non morning people are okay after a good coffee and there's plenty of great conversation happening around town over breakfast.

The other good thing about breakfast is that you know you're not going to be spending much more than $20 a person, including your coffee, unless you are really looking for a coffee hit.

So here's my 10 top places to enjoy breakfast within the Brisbane area - no particular order. Please share your favourites in the comments section below.

1. It's only six months since Paddington Deli & Epicure opened its doors in the Paddington Antique Centre building on Latrobe Terrace.Deli owner Antoinette Pease has expanded her original offering with the assistance of key new staff including Stu from Stu's Smoked Sauces and a pastry chef. The shop is now a cave of delights with shelves full of high quality produce and cabinets showing food that demands to be eaten. The only problem is what to choose.

My pick: Gluten free zucchini and corn fritters accompanied by avocado salsa.

Shouk's new style of breakfast options have found a ready audience amongst Brisbane's food lovers. You only need to look at the plate to discover why but the food certainly tastes as good as it looks.

My pick: (top photo) Latke stack with poached egg - crisp Polish pancakes sandwiches with creme fraiches topped with premium ham and surrounded by pretty pickled red onion and dill.

3. Elixir Coffee, Stafford

It's all about the coffee here as the ambience is industrial and busy. But the coffee more than makes up for it and the breakfast menu has good options with both healthly and indulgent choices.

My pick - Breakast burrito - streaky bacon, three friend eggs, cheese, mushrooms, baby spinach and house-made tomato relish.

You know the coffee is going to be good when there's a roastery in the house. The Roastery Cafe has its home in same building as Rouge Coffee Roasters, wrapping itself around the shiny Probat roaster which can be seen from the cafe through a glass window. Of course the cafe's house blend comes from Rouge Coffee.

My pic: Poached eggs with avo, fetta and chilli jam.

5. Sassafrass, Paddington

It’s a bit like sitting down to eat in your crazy aunt’s kitchen, but the food is much better. That’s the feeling I have sitting inside the quirky old Paddington Queenslander with its tongue and grove walls, vintage tables and mismatched chairs. The old Sunbeam Mixmasters perched high on the bookshelf crammed full of old magazines and books just add to the aura
